Capital Pride Alliance founder Bernie Delia dies

He most recently served as co-chair of World Pride, which is coming to D.C. in 2025.

WASHINGTON — Arguably one of the biggest advocates for the LGBTQ+ community has died. Bernie Delia died Friday at the age of 68. Delia was one of the first openly gay Justice Department appointees and served in the Clinton White House.

He was a founding member of the Capital Pride Alliance and a six-year board president. He also served as president of Dignity Washington for many years, helping to create an environment of spiritual enrichment during the height of the AIDS epidemic. He most recently served as co-chair of World Pride, which is coming to D.C. in 2025.

"He leaves us with a legacy as a champion, activist, survivor, mentor, friend, leader and a true inspiration to the LGBTQ+ community," the Capital Pride Alliance said in a statement. "Bernie will continue to guide us forward to ensure we meet this important milestone as we gather with the world to be visible, heard, and authentic."
