LARGO, Md. — As of Wednesday, Prince George’s County Animal Services and Adoption Facility (ASFAC) is allowing owners to surrender their pets if they can no longer take care of them. All adoption fees, including spay and neuter services, have also returned to normal. While the suspension was in place, these fees were waived.
In April, the ASFAC temporarily stopped accepting owner surrenders, citing overcrowding and deep cleaning protocols at the facility.
“Not allowing owner surrenders during this period has allowed us to address illnesses in the facility and bring our live release rate to nearly 80%,” said Animal Services Associate Director David Fisher.
While the facility has resumed accepting owner surrenders, the ASFAC is urging residents to consider other options before bringing their pets to the shelter. Some options include:
- Contact a county-approved rescue organization.
- Consider rehoming your pet with friends and family.
The ASFAC is open to the public Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. and on Saturday, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m.
