ST. MARY'S COUNTY, Md. — Even though our Washington Commanders lost to the Eagles over the weekend, there was one die-hard fan in attendance who has stuck by his team for decades, and he just turned 100 years old.
William "Billy" Chelsea loves his home team so much that when it was time to celebrate his big birthday, you know it had to be full-on burgundy and gold themed.
The party, at the Charlotte Hall Veteran's Home in St. Mary's County, where he is a resident, featured everything Commanders. Mr. Chelsea worked at RFK Stadium when the team went by its former name, and he is rarely seen without his tried-and-true "Skins" ballcap.
Mr. Chelsea was born on Oct. 5, 1923, and moved to the District from St. Mary's County in 1946. A hardcore D.C. sports fan, he worked at Griffith Stadium, where the football team, and the baseball team, the Washington Senators, played until 1965.
When the football franchise moved to RFK, so did Mr. Chelsea.
His undying loyalty to our Commanders, through wins and losses, has us all feeling uplifted. Happy Birthday, Mr. Chelsea!
