WASHINGTON — As we near the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are uplifted by an organization that has found an inspiring and unique way to raise awareness about an illness that claims the lives of some 42,000 women and 500 men a year.
The Pink Carpet Event is where fashion meets philanthropy.
"The Pink Carpet Event Charity Fashion Show celebrates breast cancer survivors through fashion," explained founder Ann Singleton. "It gives the survivors an opportunity to celebrate each other, learn about each other's journey, encourage each other and give them that strength to continue on."
Breast cancer survivor Rachel Campbell said walking the pink carpet is empowering.
"It really is exhilarating. It truly is. Because you feel so blessed to be a part of it because you're alive to tell about it," Campbell said.
The Pink Carpet Event donates a great deal to the Mary Washington Hospital Breast Cancer Fund. The donations go toward Mary Washington's Pink Walk event, and toward survivors' treatments. Singleton estimates the organization has raised between $4,000 and $6,000 this year.
In partnership with Easterns Automotive Group, WUSA9 donated an additional $2,200 to help with their mission.
