BETHESDA, Md. — A special salute to service from the Washington Commanders is helping us feel uplifted.
This week, Commanders players, the Command Force, mascot Major Tuddy and even the team dog Goldie visited the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda.
They got to meet with patients, many of whom are amputees from their time in service who are learning to living with new prosthetics. They signed autographs and heard the veterans' stories. David Bada, Camaron Cheeseman, Jamison Crowder, Derrick Gore, Christian Holmes, Chris Paul, Daron Payne, Joey Slye and Nick Whiteside were all on hand.
USAA partnered with the Commanders and helped organize the event. USAA Military Affairs representatives were there, distributing limited-edition Salute to Service challenge coins and team pennants to the wounded warriors.
New team owner Josh Harris said when he purchased the team, one of his primary goals was to strengthen the Commanders' relationship with the community. This event helped them do that. It also kicked off the NFL's Salute to Service Month ahead of Veterans Day next week.
