Interfaith walk, unity fair celebrates diversity in the DC region

The event is now in its 19th year.

WASHINGTON — The impact of unity is helping us get uplifted. Dozens of neighbors took part in the annual Interfaith Walk and Unity Fair over the weekend.

Now in its 19th year, the walk started at Adas Israel congregation in northwest Washington and ended at the Islamic Center on Embassy Row. Organized by the interfaith Council of Metropolitan Washington (IFC), the walk began after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It began as a way to show support for the area's Muslim community.

Since then, it has expanded to showcase the diversity and unity in the Washington, D.C. area.

"It's very important that we concentrate and learn about other faiths. We learn about our commonalities rather than our differences," said Mona Khademi with the IFC.

Symi Rom-Rymer said the resource fair following the walk has become an integral part of the annual event.

"The resource fair started as a way for local organizations and congregations to have an opportunity to share what they do with the walkers," she said. "We have so many wonderful resources in the DMV that people may not be aware of. We wanted to use the platform of the walk to lift up the wonderful work that organizations and congregations do all the time."

The weekend walk was just one of the events hosted by the IFC. Throughout the year, the IFC sponsors events designed to bring people from all backgrounds and faiths together in the DMV area.
