SILVER SPRING, Md. — An Olympic champion with DMV roots is helping us get uplifted! Dominique Dawes just made history again.
Dawes is now the first gymnast to be inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame. The Silver Spring native first made history by being the first African-American gymnast to qualify for and compete in the Olympic Games.
She went on to win 15 U.S. championships and an individual medal in Olympic gymnastics. The three-time Olympian was also a member of the U.S. team that won gold at the 1996 Summer Games.
Dawes is now paying it forward to future gymnasts in the area with her gymnastics studios in Montgomery County. We are uplifted by the sacrifice and excellence of this homegrown champion.
We want to share things that uplift you! If you have something you'd like to share, email us at GetUplifted@wusa9.com or contact Allison Seymour on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
