ARLINGTON, Va. — A famous blind painter is visiting D.C. and inspiring people to live out their dreams. John Bramblitt is a world-renowned artist. He is also this year's artist-in-residence for the National Industries for the Blind National Conference, happening this week at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City.
Bramblitt lost his vision in 2001 due to complications from epilepsy and Lyme disease. That's when he turned to painting, using it as a kind of therapy. Bramblitt uses different textures to tell the difference between textures.
Now he's teaching others to do the same by holding workshops at this week's conference.
"One of the things that I love about painting is it just shows that it doesn't matter what sort of disability you have. It doesn't mean that you have to stop living or doing what you want. And I've been fortunate. I've been blessed to be able to do this," Bramblitt said.
Brambitt's works have been sold in over 120 countries. He is also a cultural ambassador for the United States and has received three Presidential Service awards.
