WASHINGTON — Over 150 small dogs will race at The Wharf in D.C. this weekend. The 12th annual Running of the Chihuahuas has been rescheduled to Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. due to weather, organizers said.
The free family-friendly event features photo ops, prizes, a parade of adoptable dogs, drinks, music and the main event, the iconic race. Only Chihuahuas may participate in the race, but dogs of all breeds can compete in a costume contest. Winners have a chance to take home pet-friendly gifts and sponsor swag.
All race proceeds benefit Rural Dog Rescue, a nonprofit dedicated to saving dogs from high-kill shelters, according to the event on Facebook page.
