Want to avoid crowds? Here are places to view the cherry blossoms, besides the Tidal Basin

There are great places to watch the iconic trees bloom all over the region.

WASHINGTON — As peak bloom approaches during cherry blossom season, people from across the globe come to D.C. to view the beautiful trees. Many flock to the Tidal Basin, but there are several other places to take in the sights.

Meadowlark Botanical Gardens

Meadowlark Botanical Gardens is located in Vienna, Virginia. The 95-acre botanical garden is most widely known for its Winter Walk of Lights, but the gardens hold something special this time of year. The staff there started planting cherry trees right around the time the land was acquired in the 1980s. More than 30 years later, there are more than 100 cherry blossom trees on site, offering an alternative to the often crowded Tidal Basin during peak bloom.

National Arboretum

There is a wide variety of cherry blossoms to check out around the DMV, and the National Arboretum is home to many. There is also a self-guided "Beyond the Tidal Basin" tour spread across the 450 acres.

Congressional Cemetery

The Congressional Cemetery houses several different species including the Yoshino, Kwanzan and Higan trees. There will also be a Cherry Blossom 5k on April 13.

Kenwood, Bethesda

This beautiful neighborhood spot on the outskirts of D.C. is a great place to view the blossoms without the big crowds. The best places to view the cherry blossoms are along Kennedy Drive, Dorset Avenue and Kenwood Avenue.

National Cathedral

The Bishop's Garden at the National Cathedral is a peaceful place with plenty of blooms. The walled-in garden is visited by thousands every year.

Dumbarton Oaks

Cherry Hill at Dumbarton Oaks houses a mixture of cherry species, including Prunus sargentii, Prunus subhirtella, and Prunus x yedoensis.
