WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A woman changing a flat tire was hit and killed by a truck driver on Suitland Parkway late Tuesday night. She has been identified as 32 year-old Tomika Early of Suitland, Maryland.
The driver, who police say had been drinking, has been charged with second degree murder, DUI and leaving the scene of a collision. He has been identified as 52 year-old Robert Paris of Southeast.
It happened on Suitland Parkway at Stanton Road around 10:15 p.m. The woman was side-swiped by a drunk driver behind the wheel of a blue pick-up truck. The driver of the pick-up then tried to flee the scene, but rammed a white Lexus a short distance away before hitting a light pole.
The driver of the Lexus was not seriously injured.
Officers quickly responded to the scene and took the truck driver into custody. Suitland Parkway was shut down at Stanton Road for approximately six hours. The westbound lanes reopened shortly after 4 a.m. The outbound lanes reopened shortly after 5 a.m.
