ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of a tragic house fire in Old Town Alexandria that took the life of an elderly woman and sent her husband to the hospital with serious burn injuries early Wednesday morning.
According to Captain Lisa Simba, spokeswoman for the Alexandria Fire Department, a neighbor reported seeing smoke coming from a row house in the 300 block of South Pitt Street around 12:29 a.m. When firefighters arrived at the scene they found smoke and flames coming from the top floor of the home.
Rescuers were able to pull an elderly man from the blaze, who had to be rushed to Medstar Washington Hospital Center for treatment of serious burn injuries. His wife was pronounced dead at the scene, Captain Simba said.
Firefighters were able to treat the couple's dog and cat at the scene, and both are recovering, according to Captain Simba.
Officials say the fire is out and none of the neighboring homes suffered damage.
The investigation is ongoing.
