ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Wednesday evening between 6:45 p.m. and 7 p.m. there were multiple sightings of a meteor according to fireball.amsmeteors.org.
The sightings ranged from just over a second to over seven seconds.
In a Ring video from Donald Bradner in Lyndon, Virginia, the meteorite looks bigger and brighter. Very cool. I remember seeing one when I was eight years old. It's a sight that stays with you.
Other sightings came from Lebanon, PA, Harrisburg, PA, Westlake, OH, and Southfield, MI.
Meteors are harmless and never hit the surface of the earth. Meteorites, on the other hand, do hit the earth before they burn up. Meteors are fireballs and what we call shooting stars. Seeing them is regular during the time of year of meteor showers. The Persieids meteor showers, a piece of the comet Swift-Tuttle appear every year in the summer. Peak this year will be August 11-13.
