WASHINGTON — What: Weather Impact Alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Impact: Friday through 8 p.m. (showers and a few storms are still possible up until 11 a.m. Saturday)

Need: Heavy rain could slow down your commute through the afternoon and even adjust your evening plans. Keep an umbrella handy for scattered showers all the way through Saturday morning.

Need To Know:  You may need extra time to get around Friday.  Some outdoor plans may have to move indoors to stay dry and comfortable.

Off and on periods of heavy rain are in the forecast Friday, especially through the end of the evening commute.  The heaviest rain will fall anytime through 8 p.m.  After 8 p.m. there will still be showers and storms possible, but they will be a bit more scattered rather than widespread.

This means that while some areas are getting rain, others may get a break from the showers and just have clouds. Any storm that pops up should remain below severe criteria.
A Flood Watch remains in effect through midnight Friday night. The watch is mainly east of I-95 and Southern Maryland where one to two inches of rain, with localized higher amounts, is possible.

A stationary front will linger during the day, keeping the atmosphere unstable enough for showers and storms to be triggered.

Showers and isolated storms will still be possible Friday night.

While the timing of the showers may not be convenient for outdoor plans, the raindrops are certainly needed in the DMV.  D.C. is below where it should be for rainfall amounts by more than one inch and many places are now in a moderate to severe drought.

TIMELINE:

Friday Afternoon (Now - 6 p.m.) - Showers continue.

Friday Evening/Night (6 p.m. - Midnight) - Some showers and storms.

Saturday Morning (Midnight - 6 a.m.) - Showers move out of most of the DMV.
