Will Halloween be a trick or treat in the DMV?

Whether you're haunting the neighborhood or passing out treats, this year's forecast promises a witching hour filled with fun and fright without the worry of rain.

WASHINGTON — As Halloween approaches, the WUSA9 Weather Impact team is keeping an eye on the forecast and the expected weather is adding an extra layer of magic to the celebrations. Trick-or-treaters and Halloween enthusiasts can look forward to a delightful evening with partly cloudy skies and unseasonably warm temperatures, making it the perfect night for ghosts, ghouls and goblins to roam the neighborhoods.

Instead of the seasonal chilly autumn air, temperatures are expected to hover around the mid-60s during trick-or-treating time, ensuring that costumes can be displayed without the worry of added layers and jackets. With partly cloudy skies, the evening will be illuminated by a soft glow, allowing for a hint of spooky ambiance while still ensuring visibility for all those little witches and superheroes out collecting candy.

We could even come close to spooky record territory this Halloween. The warmest (high temperature) D.C. has experienced on Oct. 31 is 83 degrees. Right now, the WUSA9 Weather Impact team is forecasting 80 degrees for the temperature next Thursday. The coldest (low temperature) on record for D.C. on Halloween is a bone-chilling 26 degrees.

Thankfully, our skies will be dry, because we have endured some scary, wet Halloween days. The most rain D.C. has experienced on Oct. 31 was 1.31" in 1895. And yes, it can snow in October, as well. In 1925, D.C. picked up nearly a quarter inch of snow on an exceptionally spooky Halloween.

While the weather may be ideal, it’s always wise to keep safety in mind. Here are a few tips for a safe and enjoyable Halloween:

  • Visibility is Key: Make sure costumes are bright or have reflective elements to ensure visibility, especially as dusk sets in.
  • Stay Hydrated: With unseasonably warm weather, be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the evening, especially if you're wearing a heavy costume.
  • Plan Your Route: Familiarize yourself with your trick-or-treating route, and stick to well-lit areas.
  • Check the Candy: After a night of collecting treats, inspect all candy before indulging, ensuring that everything is safe to eat.

So, grab your costumes and gather your goblins - this Halloween in the DMV is shaping up to be a great one! Enjoy the thrills, chills, and of course, all the treats Halloween has to offer.
