Here's how weather impacts your travel as we approach the New Year

A storm system moves across the eastern U.S. after New Year's Day

WASHINGTON — Millions of Americans will travel for the holidays at the end of the year, and weather can turn an easy travel day into a nightmare if there is snow, wind and ice.

To help you plan, here's the travel forecast over the next seven days.

A dry weather pattern controls much of the country on Wednesday. Showers and a few thunderstorms are possible in Texas. Dry up and down the east coast, including the I-95 corridor. Most of the Midwest is dry too, with snow in parts of the Rockies. Rain is forecast for the Pacific Northwest.

A weather system develops on Thursday, causing rain and storms from Houston to Nashville. Dry skies prevail from the Carolinas through Maine. California, the Southwest, and west Texas will stay rain free.

Friday and Saturday will be rainy for the eastern half of the country, especially across the Mid-Atlantic, New England, and parts of the southeast U.S.
