WASHINGTON —
Almost a year has passed since we told you about the proposed plans to restore the seawall at the Tidal Basin. In that time, not much has changed but, here are a few things to know.
The final design for the seawall restoration has still not been decided on. The National Parks Service hopes to finalize the design and begin construction by the end of 2024.
Mike Litterst, with the National Parks Service, said this about the redesign, “We want to raise the seawall in the places it floods the most often. We want to widen the walkway so that during busy times like Cherry Blossom season folks are able to stay off the roots and stay away from the trees when they walk around."
Some of the funding for this project has been secured thanks to the Great American Outdoors Act. This legislation designates $6.5 billion to address much-needed maintenance across our National Parks.
The biggest update? You can make your voice heard about the proposed restorations to the Tidal Basin. There is a public comment period open until April 5th where you can submit your thoughts on the improvements.
