WASHINGTON — So, you're already fed up with the weather and ready for the snow to melt. Well, here's what temperatures we need to reach in the DMV for the snow stuck to the ground to begin disappearing.
Meteorologists say since the freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, or 0 degrees Celsius, air must be warmer than that for it to melt. On a 40-degree day, an estimated inch of snow is lost. On a 50-degree day, up to 2-4 inches of snow can melt away.
Now, just because temperatures are above 32 degrees F, doesn't mean the snow will automatically go away. It takes time. Wind plays a huge role and how breezy that day is affects the melting process. The more breezy the day, the faster the snow melts. Secondly, how cloudy the day is also impacts how fast the snow melts. Less clouds means more direct exposure to the sun and that things will melt quicker.
The density of the snow also matters. Meteorologists say wet snow has more water content, making it more dense, meaning it needs more heat and energy to melt and then evaporate. Dry snow is much less dense, therefore it takes less time to melt and then evaporate.
