WASHINGTON — A quick shift from rain to snow for the Monday morning commute brought the first snow and accumulations of the season for the DMV. Here's a closer look at the totals around the D.C. region.

How it happened

After making it into the wet 60s Sunday, cold air rushing into the area on the back side of our latest weather-maker quickly flipped rain over to snow just in time for the early Monday commute.

Although temperatures started above freezing, heavy precipitation helped to cool the atmosphere and surface temperatures down to close to freezing, allowing sloppy snow to fully make it down to the surface and even stick!

How much did we get?

  • Oakland, MD - 4.0"
  • Accident, MD - 3.5"
  • Damascus, MD - 2.5"
  • Montgomery Village, MD - 1.8"
  • Germantown, MD - 1.5"
  • Chantilly, VA - 1.3"
  • Vienna, VA - 1.2"
  • Dulles International - 0.5"
  • Reagan National - 0.1"

We already beat the snowfall for all of last season at Dulles Airport with a half-inch. Seasonal totals last year were only 0.4". Although we picked up a tenth-inch of snow at Reagan National, we are still 0.3" shy of last season's total there.

What's next?

As this latest storm system wraps up and pulls northeast off the Eastern Seaboard, sunshine has already returned for most of us. The rest of the day will be stuck with near-seasonable temperatures in the 40s. Winds will gust as high as about 30 to 35 mph, though. This will make for temperatures feeling as cold as the middle and upper 30s for much of the day, meaning not only will you need to have a jacket, scarf, and gloves ready, but you'll also need some sunglasses to start your workweek.
