Severe weather causes power outages, flooding and downed trees in DMV

More than 13,000 people in the DMV were affected by power outages, and at least 9 people had to be rescued from buildings and cars due to flooding.

Flooding was reported after Monday's severe thunderstorms. Parts of the DMV region were under flood warnings Tuesday morning.

WASHINGTON — Parts of the DMV are under Flood Warnings early Tuesday morning after Monday's severe thunderstorms caused flooding, downed trees and scattered power outages.

Multiple water rescues occurred due to the flooding, and more than 13,000 people in the region were affected by power outages throughout the night and into the morning.

As rain continued to downpour in Charles County, Md. Tuesday morning, there is flooding. Crews rescued two people from the roof of a car, Charles County officials said. The passenger in the vehicle was taken to the hospital for a check-up, but the driver refused treatment. Officials said the car is still in the water.

A bridge has damages from the impact of storms and will need repairs before they can reopen the area again.

Train service has been suspended between Van Ness and Farragut North in D.C. due to flooding at Cleveland Park and Woodley Park, officials said. Buses have been requested to transport customers. 

Route 5 at Thompson Corner Road in St. Mary's County is closed due to high water, St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said. There are also reports of flooding in several areas, including high water on Mechanicsville Road at Yowaiski Mill Road.

In Prince George's County, significant flooding continued in Upper Marlboro on Water Street Tuesday morning after flash floods Monday evening. 

Firefighters rescued five adults trapped in a building in the 400 block of Old Ritchie Road on Monday due to flooding. Another adult was rescued from a vehicle at Old Ritchie Road and Walker Mill Drive. There were no injuries involved and no one needed EMS attention.

The Prince George's Fire Department also rescued an adult trapped in a van in Suitland, Maryland due to flash flooding. 

Multiple cars were rerouted due to flooding on Forestville Road and Suitland Parkway, but one Metro bus decided to power on through. 


Damaging winds and some isolated hail were the main threats of Monday's storms. Wind speeds clocked in at 60 mph at National Airport and 70 mph at Bolling Air Force Base in Southeast, D.C. 

Maryland State Police had to shut down both sides of the highway on route 50 near 295 around 7 p.m. due to downed wires, and by 11:15 p.m. Pepco still had no restoration ETA. 

Several trees fell in the Trinidad neighborhood of D.C. causing car damage.

The forecast for the rest of the week shows spotty thunderstorm chances each day, afternoon and early evening, along with a continued heatwave.
