TIMELINE: Here's when the worst weather hits Saturday

Storms will continue to develop throughout the afternoon and last into the evening.

Severe weather outlook for Saturday

WASHINGTON — A strong area of low pressure and a cold front will move across the east coast, bringing a line of strong to severe storms to our region.

With the wind energy and a strong front, we'll be looking at a damaging wind threat with thunderstorms that form along the front. isolated tornadoes remain a threat throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Small hail is also a threat in storms that develop.

The strongest storms will occur now through 6 p.m.

Now to 4 p.m.

The line of storms will get stronger and become severe at times as it moves east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Expect hefty storms to reach Frederick, Leesburg, and the Manassas area first, followed by the heart of the metro after 2 p.m. Storms in this period may bring damaging winds, some hail, and dangerous lightning. An isolated low-end tornado may also spin up in this time. Storms will reach Fredericksburg and Southern Maryland toward 3 and 4 p.m.

4 p.m. through 8 p.m.

Isolated severe storms will still be possible, but heavy rain will be the main threat through the early evening hours. The line of showers and storms will make for a damp end to the day across much of the DMV, with drying skies west of the Blue Ridge in this time period.

8 p.m. and later

Storms and rain will clear the area, temperatures will fall into the 50s behind the strong cold front. Gusty winds will remain, however severe weather will no longer be a threat.
