Severe weather causes damage, power outages in DMV

Road closures, a collapsed roof and a car stranded in high water are some of the results from Wednesday's severe weather.

WASHINGTON — Severe storms in the DMV left a vehicle stranded in high water, trees down and a partial roof collapsed Wednesday evening.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to a report of an occupied vehicle that was stranded in high water between Clopper Road and Route 355, on Game Preserve Road, around 3 pm.

Crews worked quickly to remove the driver from their car without incident.

Emergency crews soon responded to another call for assistance less than 10 minutes away from that scene.

Around 3:15 pm, the roof at the HomeGoods store, along Quince Orchard Road in Gaithersburg, partially collapsed while workers and customers were inside.

Pete Piringer, spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire and Rescue, said the collapse was likely caused by a large accumulation of water on the roof from the evening's storms.

"[It was] a catastrophic collapse," he said. "Maybe 25 percent of the store is damaged."

No one was hurt in the incident.

Piringer said a natural gas pipeline in the store was damaged, but crews were able to shut it off before any further damage at the site was incurred.

Wedneday's strong storms also led to a power outage in Germantown.

According to Pepco, a lightning strike likely caused a transformer to explode along Amaranth Drive, near Middlebrook Road.

The transformer explosion left more than 100 people without power.

However, Pepco was able to restore power in the area to affected customers around 9 p.m..
