WASHINGTON — The main weather threat has moved out of the DMV Wednesday morning, but flood waters are still a concern as the cleanup begins around the region. Coastal flooding remains top of mind, and flood watches remain in effect Wednesday morning. The strong storm that rolled in Tuesday knocked out power to thousands, flooded roads and left some drivers stranded.
Power Outages:
As of 7 a.m. on Wednesday, according to Dominion Energy's power outage map, 552 customers in Northern Virginia are without power. Pepco's outage map shows more than 1,000 customers are without power in D.C. and Maryland. Estimated restoration is expected by 10 a.m.
There is no word at this time on when power may be restored.
A power outage can be caused by a myriad of things but it is important to be as prepared as you possibly can, especially during severe weather. Extended power outages can impact everyone from a home to an entire community. It can cause issues with communication, prevent the use of medical devices, impact access to water and cause food to spoil while grocery stores may be closed.
Dominion Energy says residents should not connect any portable generators to a home's electrical system. Under no circumstances should you ever bring a generator into your home in order to create heat. Odorless and colorless carbon monoxide gas from gas-fueled heaters and generators can build up, resulting in injuries or even death.
Traffic Alerts:
Flood water closed several roads around the region Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.
According to Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Sligo Creek Parkway between Carrol and Flower is closed due to flooding, and will remain closed Wednesday.
Flooding was also reported in the area of Lawyers Road and Hunter Mill Road in Oakton. Drivers are asked to avoid the area.
In Fairfax County, shut down Woodburn Road between Spicewood Drive and Taylor Lane. The Fairfax County Fire Department responded to the scene.
Flooding was also reported at Wolf Run Shoals at Rutledge Drive in Fairfax Station.
At least seven people have been rescued from their vehicles trapped in rising waters near Lanham Severn Road and Green Haven Road. No injuries were reported as a result.
A large tree is down in the 3300 block of Russell Road in Alexandria. Residents driving in the area are asked to remain cautious.
A tree is also down on Rhode Island Avenue in Northeast, D.C. at Monroe Street. DC Fire and EMS has cut and removed enough of the branch to reopen one of two lanes.
Park Police say Beach Drive is now closed from the D.C. line to East West Highway and Kensington Pkwy to Knowles Ave.
Another water rescue took place in Beltsville, Maryland Tuesday night in the 10900 block of Baltimore Avenue. A man was pulled from rising waters by a passerby. Firefighters rushed the man to a local hospital in critical condition.
It is important to know how to prepare and stay safe during severe weather. There are several ways you can make sure you are ready.
If you cannot stay home, AAA suggests drivers always check weather conditions before heading out. Drivers should always travel with a full tank of gas, a fully charged cell phone and wear a seatbelt.
