Potomac River flooding shuts down White's Ferry

According to the National Weather Service, the Potomac River could fall short of major flood stage at White's Ferry on Saturday, at 23.7 feet. That is enough water to reach the first floor ceiling at the White's Ferry store.

DICKERSON, Md. - A well-known ferry in the DMV will close for several days due to flooding on the Potomac River.

White's Ferry is located on the banks of the Potomac River just outside of Poolesville, Md. The ferry serves roughly 600 people who commute between Loudoun and Montgomery counties every day.

White's Ferry closed to commuters on Wednesday. The store and grill at White's Ferry followed suit on Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, the Potomac River could fall short of major flood stage at White's Ferry on Saturday, at 23.7 feet. That is enough water to reach the first floor ceiling at the White's Ferry store.

White's Ferry Operations Manager Sharon Shefter told WUSA9 workers at the ferry spent time Thursday moving equipment at the site to higher ground.

"We've secured all of the tools and equipment needed to operate the ferry just as a precaution," she said.

Shefter added that she is hopeful parts of White's Ferry may be open by the end of the weekend.

"In a good situation, we'll be able to open Sunday, but again, everyday, the predictions change," she said.

This is not the first time there has been flooding at White's Ferry. There are flood markers painted as high as the second floor of the White's Ferry store from decades past.
