PAGE COUNTY, Va. — Dangerous weather has shut down classes and after-school events in Page County for a second day. Rain is expected to linger in the DMV until Wednesday, as the remnants of Hurricane Helene move out.
Page County Public Schools (PCPS) announced Tuesday that all afternoon and evening events and activities have been canceled due to weather conditions. This cancellation affects all PCPS buildings, schools, offices, and facilities across the county.
The closure also extends to any use of buildings by the Recreation Department or other community groups. Officials have not yet provided information on rescheduling, but updates will be shared as available.
Rainfall and hazardous road conditions forced the school district to cancel classes Monday, as well.
Officials remind residents to stay safe.
First responders and swift-water rescue teams have been busy since Sunday dealing with flooding at the Shenandoah River. On Sunday, volunteer firefighters responded to the area of Alger Road around 1 p.m. Fire crews said 13 campers were stranded across the river with no means of getting to safety.
Firefighters used a power boat to get all the campers to safety.
Later that same day, around 5:30 p.m., crews rescued a man who was stranded in his car in the Page Valley area. Rescue crews used a raft to get the man to safety.
The remnants of Helene will linger across the region through Wednesday, according to the WUSA9 Weather Team. This will bring persistent cloud cover and scattered showers.
