CULPEPER COUNTY, Va. — The National Weather Service (NWS) in Sterling confirmed Tuesday evening that a tornado appeared in Culpeper County on Sunday night.

An NWS ground survey of storm damage in the Rixeyville area confirmed that the rotating severe thunderstorm developed a tornado. The tornado formed at 9:27 p.m. Sunday and ended less than 10 minutes later, at 9:35 p.m. A Tornado Warning had already been issued by NWS at 9:14 p.m.

According to NWS, the tornado was an EF-1 with winds peaking at 95 miles per hour. Officials believe the tornado was just short of five miles long and spanned 100 yards wide.

The tornado touched down along Dunkard Church Road, less than a mile west of Eggsbornsville Road in rural, northwest Culpeper County. The tornado left behind several snapped and uprooted trees and damage to at least one home from the lofted debris. Additionally, the winds overturned a large shed with five people inside, who were injured.

"The tornado passed over several homes and a church, but no structural damage was noted to these," the NWS website reads.

As the tornado continued its path for two more miles, more trees were snapped down. The last of the damage was reported in the 9000 block of Monumental Mills Road.
