PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, Md. — Four deaths were reported in Prince George’s County, one in Anne Arundel, and one in Baltimore City because of extreme heat, which is expected to continue across the D.C. region.
The Maryland Department of Health says the following are signs to watch out for when it comes to heat exhaustion:
- dehydration
- cool, pale, or flushed skin
- muscle cramps
- nausea
If you are suffering from heat exhaustion you need to drink fluids and find shade.
The more serious concern is going to be heat stroke. The Maryland Department of Health says the following are warning signs:
- a body temperature over 105 degrees
- dry, red skin
- shallow breathing
- disorientation
- delirium
If you’re experiencing this or you see someone else you think might be experiencing this you need to call 911.
Excessive heat warnings have prompted officials in Prince George's County to change the trash pick-up schedule. A new adjusted waste collection start time will operate from July 15 through September 30. Residents are advised to have their carts at the curb by 5 a.m.
The Maryland’s health Department shared the following tips to help cope with extreme heat:
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine and overly-sweetened beverages
• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing
• Avoid direct sunlight and wear sunscreen; stay in the shade when possible
• If you’re exercising outside do it in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler
