FROSTBURG, Md. — Snow lovers rejoice! The first snow flurries of the season were spotted in Western Maryland Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service issued a Snow Squall Warning for parts of the area, including Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland.
NWS officials warned of "white-out conditions" and blowing snow along Interstate 68, U.S. 220 and U.S. 40 Tuesday morning.
Closer to the District, we aren't expecting to see any flurries, but it is one of the coldest days of the season, thanks to wind chill that will make it feel like it's in the 20s. Here's a look at when it will be the coldest in the DMV.
Here's what traffic cameras along I-68 looked like Tuesday morning:
Weather watchers in Frostburg, Maryland, reported seeing nearly an inch of snow on the ground Tuesday morning. Dillon shared this video of conditions there with WUSA9 via X (formerly known as Twitter):
Some flakes were also reported in Montgomery County, including in Gaithersburg by our own Adam Longo and in Germantown by weather watcher Laura Mitchell.
According to the WUSA9 Weather Team, this is an early sign of things to come this winter.
The last few winters have been lackluster to say the least in terms of snowfall for the DMV. For the 2022-2023 season, the region saw less than half an inch all winter long at Reagan National Airport and Dulles International Airport; even less snow was recorded at Baltimore/Washington International.
But this upcoming winter could bring good news for snow lovers. While it's best not to get your hopes too high, we are working with a strong El Niño pattern this winter, which can mean feast or famine in terms of snowfall. The WUSA9 Weather Team thinks this strong El Niño winter will be feast, not famine in the snowfall department.
