DC pools see huge attendance spike this summer

Looking to take a dip? It could be a little crowded.

WASHINGTON — The DMV is in the grips of another heat wave. The WUSA9 Weather Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert for potentially dangerous heat through Wednesday. With higher humidity, it will feel much hotter than the actual air temperature. Another Weather Impact Alert will go into effect for high heat and strong to severe storms Wednesday.

One way residents are looking to beat the heat is at public pools. According to D.C.'s Department of Parks and Recreation, eight pools in D.C. have reached capacity so far this year. It's already happened 21 times.

DPR says its busiest pool in D.C. is Banneker, with nearly 25,000 guests so far. But it's not just one pool drawing a crowd. Average daily visits are up 28% compared to last year, and overall attendance across all pools is up 284%. That's about four times last year's attendance.

Even with the big attendance bump, DPR officials are encouraging residents to cool down at the pool.

Here are some tips beyond the pool for dealing with extreme heat.

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid alcohol, caffeine and overly-sweetened beverages
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing
  • Avoid direct sunlight and wear sunscreen; stay in the shade when possible
  • Avoid salt tablets unless advised by a doctor to take them
  • Schedule physical activity in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler, and take breaks if necessary
