-40 degree Fahrenheit wind chill possible Friday evening

WASHINGTON — Winds will be dangerously gusty as a significant cold front moves through the DMV on Friday.

There is a High Wind Warning and Advisory out for the area. Stronger winds will be out west where gusts will be near 70 mph. Areas in the Wind Advisory will see gusts near 55 mph. These winds will be damaging and have potential to cause power outages. If you have holiday decorations, be sure they are tied down. Also, don't forget about your four-legged friends!

The High Wind Warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. The Wind Advisory is in effect until 2 p.m. Friday.

There is also a Wind Chill Warning in effect until 12 p.m. on Sunday and an Advisory in effect until 10 a.m. on Saturday. 'Feels-like' temperatures could be near -40 degrees Fahrenheit for areas west of I-81. In the D.C. Metro region, it will feel as cold as -10 degrees Fahrenheit by evening.

These are dangerously cold temperatures. If you have to spend any time outside today be sure you are bundled up!

Gusty winds will calm heading into Christmas weekend but it will still be very cold. Saturday and Sunday will both stay below freezing all day. These cold temperatures could bring us the coldest Christmas in more than 30 years. Record lows were set back in the Arctic Outbreak of 1983 but 1989 is the next notable year where temps fell to 11 degrees Fahrenheit in the District.
