WASHINGTON — The first snowfall of the year prompted several closings and early dismissals in D.C., Maryland, and Virginia on Tuesday.
A winter storm is expected to bring snow and some rain in parts of the D.C. metro, Northern Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia on Tuesday afternoon.
The critical timing is between noon. to 7 p.m.
The decision to close or delay may be because the snowfall corresponds with the time people get off work in the afternoon and it's during some after-school activities and sports practices.

- Prince William County Public Schools: 2-hour early release
- Frederick County Public Schools (MD): 2-hour early release
- Fairfax County Public Schools: 2-hour early release
- Montgomery County Public Schools: 2.5-hour early release
- Culpeper County Schools:2-hour early release
- Falls Church City Schools: 2-hour early release
- Manassas City Schools: 2-hour early release
- Manassas Park City Schools: 2-hour early release
- Spotsylvania County Public Schools: 2-hour early release
- Stafford County Public Schools: 2-hour early release
- Washington County Public Schools: 2-hour early release
- Alexandria City Schools: 2-hour early release

Closed
- Federal Government: Closes at 1 p.m.
- Loudoun County Public Schools: Closed
- Walter Reed National Military Medical Center has canceled all outpatient clinic appointments, a spokesperson confirmed: Clinic staff will contact patients to reschedule appointments as soon as possible. The hospital is open for emergency and inpatient services only.
Cancellation of evening activities and after school programs
- Prince George's County Public Schools: All school-sponsored after school activities canceled, including evening high school classes.
- Anne Arundel County Public Schools: All school-sponsored after school activities canceled, including evening high school classes.
The snow is expected to bring a dusting to two inches on grassy and elevated surfaces in the D.C. metro area. For areas northwest of the metro, they may see 1-3 inches of snow.
