WASHINGTON — A man is dead after losing his balance and falling onto a train track bed at U Street station in Northwest D.C. late Tuesday night, causing suspensions on the Green Line.
At about 9:30 p.m. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said Green Line trains were single-tracking between U Street and Georgia Avenue due to an unauthorized person on the tracks. DC Fire and Emergency Rescue Department crews and Metro Transit Police Department arrived shortly after and worked to rescue the man from the track.
The man was removed from the tracks and received medical attention just before 10 p.m. Rescue personnel provided life-saving measures, but was unsuccessful and the man was pronounced, WMATA officials said.
Metro service was initially suspended between stops at Mount Vernon Square and Georgia Avenue during the incident response, but Green Lines are now operating as normal.
An initial review of video footage shows that the man was unsteady on his feet and fell off the platform onto the track bed, WMATA said in a statement. The man was not hit by a train, the agency also added.
Just after 11 p.m., WMATA tweeted that normal service had resumed at U Street station and the shuttle bus services were canceled.
The victim's identity and the cause of death have not yet been revealed.
