JetBlue seeks to add second flight to Puerto Rico from DCA

JetBlue has operated the only daily nonstop service between DCA and San Juan since the DOT awarded slot exemptions to the airline in 2012.

ARLINGTON, Va. — As airlines put their hats in the ring to get one of the five new round-trip options at DCA, JetBlue wants to make Puerto Rico an option for flyers.

JetBlue announced on Wednesday that it wants to add a second daily round-trip between Reagan National Airport and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The airline is applying for one of the new slot exemptions allowed as part of the FAA Reauthorization Act.

The airline has operated the only daily nonstop service between DCA and SJU since the DOT awarded slot exemptions to the airline in 2012.

“JetBlue looks forward to submitting our application to enhance the connection between Reagan National and our focus city, San Juan, with convenient double-daily low fare roundtrip flights between the two capitals,” said Robert Land, JetBlue’s head of government affairs and associate general counsel. “Puerto Rico, known as ‘La Isla del Encanto,’ relies on air service to maintain and enhance its connection with the mainland United States, and to Washington, D.C. in particular.”

Five new slots are being added for flights beyond the airport's 1,250-mile perimeter rule.

Southwest Airlines is applying to add daily non-stop service to Las Vegas. American Airlines wants to add flights to San Antonio, and Alaska Airlines hopes to add a new flight to San Diego.
