Emergency landing minutes after takeoff at Reagan National Airport

The plane had just taken off from Reagan National Airport and was headed for Newark when a smell of smoke was noticed in the cabin.

ARLINGTON, Va. — A plane traveling from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) to Newark, New Jersey made an emergency landing just minutes after takeoff Tuesday morning due to mechanical issues.

The United Airlines flight, operated by Go Jet, took off from DCA at approximately 10:25 a.m., according to Micah Lillard, spokesperson for Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA). Lillard said smoke was smelled in the cabin just after takeoff, and an emergency landing was declared. The plane was routed back to DCA approximately three minutes later

The plane was towed back to its gate, and rescue workers from Arlington Fire, DC Fire and MWAA Fire/Rescue examined the aircraft.

"United 4408 ... from Reagan National to Newark returned to the airport for a mechanical issue," United Airlines said in a statement. "The aircraft landed safely. Customers will be booked on one of our next flights to Newark, which occur hourly."

Lillard said it is unknown at this time how many passengers were onboard the plane. No injuries have been reported at this time.

This is a developing story and WUSA9 will continue to update as more information becomes available.
