WASHINGTON — It's just about summertime and we at WUSA9 have never felt so fine.

Get outside this week with one of our recommended free or cheap events taking place across the District.

There is something for everyone on our list, including free exercise classes, outdoor markets, a book festival, yoga with dogs, food trucks and more! 

Every week, WUSA9 is giving you the details on at least nine cheap local activities to check out in your off time.

Thursday, May 18:

Yoga on the Yards Park boardwalk, 355 Water Street SE

As part of the five-week Capitol Riverfront Spring Fitness Series, on Thursdays at 7 a.m., a free one-hour yoga class will be held on the Yards Park boardwalk.

Capital Book Fest, 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Downtown D.C.'s outdoor pop-up bookstore returns to Wilson Plaza on Thursday.

Shop gently used books, CDs, DVDs and vinyl on sale for $6 or less.

All books provided by Carpe Librum, a local bookstore benefitting the nonprofit organization Turning the Page

The event will be canceled in the case of inclement weather.

Comedy at Town Tavern, 2323 18th Street NW

Every Thursday at 8 p.m., local comics take the stage at Town Tavern in Adams Morgan.

Tickets to see the hour-and-a-half show are donation based and can be reserved ahead of time online

Friday, May 19:

Flava Food Truck Fest, 633 Howard Road SE

On the third Friday of every month, Flava Food Truck Fest takes over Sandlot Anacostia in Southeast D.C.

From 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., head to event venue to try a variety of dishes all made by Black-owned food truck owners.  

There will also be music and games during the event.

Admission to this event is free. 

A.W.E. Open Mic at Busboys and Poets, 625 Monroe Street NE

On the third Friday of every month, Busboys and Poets holds an "amplifying women everywhere" open mic night. 

Poet Carlynn Newhouse will host the two-hour event from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. 

Audience members can expect to hear from a diverse chorus of women's voices and a vast array of professional spoken word performers, open mic rookies, and musicians.

Tickets are $5 per person to attend and can be purchased ahead of time online

Saturday, May 20:

Friendship Heights Makers Market & Street Festival, 5200 Wisconsin Avenue NW

Two dozen vendors will come together Saturday for the Friendship Heights Makers Market from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Stop by and knock out your summer gift shopping while supporting local artists.

There will be giveaways for kids, dance lessons and tons of interactive fun.

The market located on the west side of Wisconsin Avenue will extend from Booeymonger's to Rodman's.

Trans Pride Washington, D.C. conference, 901 G Street NW 

Trans Pride is back in the District.

The free conference will take place all day Saturday at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library from 9:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.

Conference activities include; workshops, panel discussions, keynote address, resources and an exhibitor fair.

The full agenda has yet to be released.  

An after party will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at As You Are in Southeast D.C.

Barkfit Puppy Yoga at District Dogs, 3210 Georgia Avenue NW

Starting at 10:30 a.m., practice yoga alongside your dog during this hour-long class put on by District Dogs in NW D.C. 

Tickets are $15 per person to attend the certified instructor-led class and can be purchased ahead of time online

Mats are provided.

World Culture Festival at Meridian Hill Park, W Street NE

This pop-up event will celebrate cultural diversity with live performances and music from all over the world.

The festival will kick off with D.C.'s own Go Go dance at 11 a.m. and run until 5 p.m.

Attendees are encouraged to enjoy the food and cultural pavilions while at the event.

Sunday, May 21:

Boxing + HITT class on the Yards Park boardwalk, 355 Water Street SE

As part of the five-week Capitol Riverfront Spring Fitness Series, on Sundays at 8:30 a.m., a free boxing and HITT class with Mayweather Boxing + Fitness will be offered on the Yards Park boardwalk.

Attendees are asked to arrive at least five minutes before the start of class.
