Train derailment in Fredericksburg, Virginia, police investigate

Officials say at least five cars derailed and crashed into six garages at Cobblestone Square.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — Crews have been working tirelessly for the last 24 hours to remove the train that derailed in Fredericksburg, Saturday night.

Officials say as of Sunday afternoon all but one of the five cars have been removed. CSX took over the investigation and says all train cars should be removed and rerailed between 8pm and midnight.

According to officials Saturday night just before 9 p.m., a freight train traveling along the 400 block of Cobblestone Drive derailed causing damage to structures in the area. Officials say at least five cars derailed and crashed into six garages at Cobblestone Square.

Crews with the Fire Department say there were no injuries. There were hazardous materials onboard the train, but they weren't on the cars that derailed.

The cause of the derailment has not been released. A preliminary investigation showed there were properties behind the wall that the train crashed into. The crash caused the wall to collapse into the garages. The train was not carrying any passengers at the time of the crash.

Crews say due to the extent of the crash, they will be on the scene for an extended amount of time and are asking people to avoid the area. It is unclear how long it will take them to remove the trains. The CSX will be taking over the investigation from Fredericksburg Police.

The Virginia Railway Express says they plan to have full service back by Monday morning. Trains have been getting by the crash site all day but at reduced speeds. The collapsed garages have also been isolated by fencing and screening provided CSX.

The cause of the derailment still hasn't been released. That report will be released through the CSX, no word on when that will be.
