VIRGINIA, USA — A person is dead after a police chase of a carjacked vehicle ended in officers shooting and killing the driver. The investigation left parts of I-95 Southbound closed overnight and into this morning. All lanes reopened around 8:45 a.m., but residual delays were impacting traffic.
Virginia State Police said Wednesday night around 10:15 p.m., a trooper saw a car that was wanted in an armed carjacking case from Prince George’s County by the U.S. Park Police. When the car did not stop for a trooper, they began to chase it southbound on I-95, police said.
During the chase, a state trooper vehicle flipped over after the suspect vehicle hit it. Police say the trooper was not hurt in the crash.
The chase ended when troopers forced the car to stop around the 150-mile marker.
While stopped, police say the driver ignored their commands and made “multiple abrupt furtive movements with his hands,” according to a press statement. Multiple troopers then shot at the car, police say.
The driver was pronounced dead on the scene. Two passengers in the car are alive, but one was flown to Fairfax Hospital and is in stable condition waiting to go into surgery. The other is in police custody and is not injured.
Police have not said how many officers fired their weapons, but four officers have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
The incident shut down southbound lanes in parts of Virginia for hours overnight. Members of the Virginia Department of Transportation posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that southbound lanes along I-95 were closed starting at around 10:45 p.m.
