ATTN DC drivers: Traffic pattern to change at infamous intersection

Here's what drivers need to know.

WASHINGTON — Heads up D.C. drivers, traffic is being shifted along a busy intersection in Northeast starting Friday.

The changes are coming to the intersection of Florida Avenue and New York Avenue, formally known as "Dave Thomas Circle." Officials say the intersection has been renamed Mamie "Peanut" Johnson Plaza.

Here are the key changes you need to know:

  • First Street NE: The newly constructed section between Florida Avenue NE and New York Avenue NE will open to two-way traffic.
  • Florida Avenue NE: This street will also open to two-way traffic.

The construction will focus on three new park areas located as follows:

  1. Parcel 1: Next to the People's Building, between Florida Avenue NE and First Street NE.
  2. Parcel 2: At the center of the intersection of First Street NE, Florida Avenue NE, and New York Avenue NE.
  3. Parcel 3: Next to the ATF Building, between New York Avenue NE and Florida Avenue NE.

During this period, drivers should anticipate delays. Traffic controls, including signage, will be in place to guide motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians safely through the work zone. All roadway users are advised to stay alert and observe signage and work zones while traveling in this area.

The completed project promises to improve overall safety for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists along the corridor. Features include Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant intersections, traffic calming measures, improved traffic signal operation, enhanced streetscape, and three new green spaces.
