URBANA, Md. — A large tractor-trailer fire on I-270 southbound has resulted in delays during the Wednesday morning commute in Urbana, Maryland.
Around 6:11 a.m., Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination announced on their social media page about the tractor-trailer fire. It is located at I-270 before MD-109 or Exit 22 in Frederick County.
Firefighters are at the scene tackling the blaze. At the fiery scene, large amounts of smoke can be seen coming from the tractor-trailer and even sparks at times.
According to a preliminary investigation, the tractor trailer was heading south on I-270 when another vehicle pulled up beside it and motioned to the driver that the trailer was on fire. The driver pulled over to the shoulder and the trailer became fully engulfed in flames. No injuries were reported.
All travel lanes have been blocked as the fire is being brought under control. Traffic is being diverted to MD-80. Southbound delays begin near MD-85. One northbound lane is blocked as well, and delays are also building on that side.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
