TRAFFIC ALERT: DC roads close, parking restricted and Metro impacted for NATO Summit

From July 9-July 11, D.C. is hosting the NATO Summit, and some of the closures and restrictions will have a major impact on commuters.

WASHINGTON — D.C.’s 2024 NATO Summit is scheduled to begin in a little over a week. As the dates grow closer an increase in local security measures will be put into place.

People driving and walking in the Downtown area should expect high impacts around the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library, Mount Vernon Square, Mellon Auditorium, and around the White House.

Businesses and homes within the affected areas will still be accessible for the most part however, drivers and pedestrians should anticipate having to undergo security screenings prior to entering.

Trash services, mail and package delivery will continue in both perimeters; however, schedules will be shifted for service to occur in the overnight and early morning hours. All deliveries entering either perimeter must first go through the Remote Delivery Site located at New York Avenue NW at 6th Street NW for screening. The Remote Delivery Site will be open beginning July 10 at 6 a.m. and continue operations until approximately 7:30 p.m. July 11. All drivers must have a valid driver’s license rated for the vehicle they are driving. Upon completion of the screening process, all delivery vehicles will be sealed and must proceed directly to the security checkpoint. If they arrive at the checkpoint with a broken seal, they will be required to return to the screening site for re-screening.

“The U.S. Secret Service and our partners have been actively working with the community to provide the most secure environment while minimizing any impacts to the public.” Matt Stohler, Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. secret Service’s Washington Field Office, said.

Temporary road and sidewalk closures will begin July 8 as temporary anti-scale fencing is installed.  Closures around the Mellon Auditorium will go into effect the morning of July 9 and conclude late that night. Official closures will begin July 10 and run through July 11 around the Washington Convention Center, Carnegie Library, Mount Vernon Square.

Here’s what you need to know to stay ahead of the curve and minimize the impact on your daily routine, according to MPD:
