South and Northbound lane closures on DC-295 for removal of old Douglas Pedestrian Bridge

The closures will be in effect starting at Route 50 Southbound, John Hanson Highway, and traveling northbound at Benning Road Northeast.

WASHINGTON — Temporary closures for the north and southbound lanes on DC-295 will be put in place on Friday night and will last into Saturday, according to the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).

The closures are due to removal of the main span of the old Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge. Is weather does not allow for the safe removal on April 5, DDOT will move the day of  doing this to April 12.

The overnight closures will begin on 8 p.m. on Friday and will run until Saturday, April 6 at 5 a.m.

The DC-295 detour will consist of two-lane closures of the north and southbound lanes, with intermediate, full closures between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Work will take place adjacent to the Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge, between Quarles Street Northeast and Nash Street Northeast, and commuters are being asked to use alternative routes during that time frame.

The closures will be in effect starting at Route 50 Southbound, John Hanson Highway, and traveling northbound at Benning Road Northeast.

While the pedestrian bridge is being completed, pedestrian traffic will be detoured to the Nash Street Northeast Pedestrian Bridge.

Once completed, the Douglas Street Pedestrian Bridge project will remove and replace the existing bridge over Kenilworth Avenue, Northeast (DC-295), and adjacent service roads with a new bridge with increased vertical clearance and ADA-compliant ramps. It will also improve the bridge's structural integrity.
