WASHINGTON — Cameras added at three D.C. intersections on Tuesday will fine drivers who run red-lights. The cameras were placed near red-lights in Congress Heights, Washington Heights and Logan Circle.
Starting Tuesday, the penalty for running these red lights will begin as a warning citation sent to drivers by mail. This "educational phase," will end on Nov. 22 after 30 days, according to the D.C. Department of Transportation (DDOT). Afterwards, drivers can expect a $150 fine for running these red lights.
The red light cameras have been installed at the following intersections:
- South Capitol Street Southwest and MLK Jr. Avenue Southeast
- Southern Avenue Northeast and Wheeler Road Southeast
- Rhode Island Avenue Northeast and North Capitol Street Northwest
DDOT classified these intersections as High Injury Network (HIN) locations, installing four new cameras across three locations.
"The HIN locations are traffic sites where data analysis has identified speeding and red light running as safety issues," DDOT said on Tuesday.
