Fire damages Harpers Ferry Bridge, railroad traffic restored a day later

The fire has since been put out but officials say the damage is extensive.

SANDY HOOK, Md. — Some railroad traffic came to a halt Monday afternoon in Maryland after a fire damaged Harpers Ferry Bridge

According to the Washington County Division of Emergency Services, crews were alerted to a fire at the CSX railroad bridge over the Potomac River in Sandy Hooks shortly after 3:30 p.m.

When crews arrived, they found a large fire on the bridge that appeared to be quickly spreading. As a safety precaution, Washington County crews requested two boats as crews on the bridge worked above the Potomac River.

Due to the high temperatures and extensive damage, fire crews from Jefferson County, West Virginia, and Loudoun County, Virginia arrived to help Washington County crews extinguish the flames. The additional help also brought more water tankers due to limited water supply access.

The fire was put out around 5:30 p.m. but officials say the damage is extensive. There is no word on what caused the flames to spark at this time.

While crews worked the area, railroad traffic was halted. The fire damage forced the delay and cancelation of several trains on the Brunswick Line. Click here for the latest service alerts.

Nearly 24 hours later, MDOT confirmed that MARC between Brunswick and Martinsburg has been restored.
