Propane tanker overturns on Route 50 at Severn River Bridge causing road closures, school delays in Anne Arundel County

Crews estimated it would take five hours to completely reopen the highway, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.

ARNOLD, Md. — A tanker trucker carrying propane overturned on westbound U.S. 50 at the Severn River Bridge, forcing sections of the bridge to close in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

The tanker truck overturned on westbound Route 50 and leaked fuel just before 5 a.m., Anne Arundel County Police Department said. All lanes of the bridge were initially closed. Two lanes are open on eastbound U.S. 50 with two other lanes remain closed as of 8:30 a.m.

Crews estimated it would take five hours to completely reopen the highway, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA).

All Broadneck cluster schools will operate virtually with a two-hour delay. Other schools in the county would operate as regularly scheduled, Anne Arundel County schools said in a tweet on Monday.

"We are working through those issues on a minute-by-minute basis but families who have students in the Broadneck area who travel to magnet programs and those whose students attend schools in the Annapolis area may be the most impacted by delays or inability to get bus service," the school stated in an online update. "Thank you for your patience and understanding."

The MDOT SHA is assisting local police and fire departments.

Crews on the scene are attempting to upright the tanker, tow it to another location and offload the diesel tanks. Then they will burn off the 10,000 pounds of propane the truck is carrying.

If the crews are unable to complete this operation at another location, they will try do so at the scene.

The cause of this accident is under investigation.
