WASHINGTON — For the first time since its creation in 1973, the entire Metrobus network could be undergoing a comprehensive redesign that may bring 24-hour bus service.
According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the Better Bus plan has been in the works since 2020, when officials began gathering and analyzing data in regard to Metrobus service.
The agency says the redesign would be an opportunity to keep up with the changing region, better connect people to where they need to go, create an easy-to-use network and promote equality. WMATA claims half of Metrobus customers are low-income and 84% of riders are people of color.
The drafted "Visionary Network" would change bus routes and schedules, aiming to create a faster and more frequent service. The proposal also includes a possible 24-hour bus service schedule.
On the Better Bus Network website, drafted maps can be found for D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Each area also includes a drafted regional 24-hour service map.

WMATA will host 50 events open to the public, in honor of Metrobus's 50 years of service, in order to get feedback on the proposal. Each event will feature interactive stations, treats and a DJ, as well as a kids' tent where children can get their face painted and grab a balloon or coloring book.
With these changes, the agency believes they could get 50,000 more riders a day when implemented. If you cannot attend one of the 50 events, WMATA also has an online survey available.
The earliest changes could be coming is July 2024.
No one was inside the store at the time of the crash, according to firefighters. 3 people, including the bus driver, were taken to the hospital with injuries.
