Shopping cart on tracks causes disabled Red Line Metro train

According to reports, there were approximately 160 people on the train during the time of the accident.

WASHINGTON — A metro train was disabled after running over a shopping cart Friday evening.

Just before 8 p.m. a Red Line train traveling between Rhode Island Avenue and Brookland Station hit a metal shopping cart on the tracks. The Metro Transit Police Department and DC Fire and Rescue were on the scene to help with the evacuation.

According to reports, there were approximately 160 people on the train during the time of the accident. With the help of MTPD and DCFD all 160 passengers were safely evacuated and transferred onto a rescue train.

Thankfully, no passenger reported any injuries or required medical attention. At this time investigators are looking into how the cart got into the station and onto the tracks.

In the meantime, while MTPD continues to work on getting the disabled train off the tracks, trains will single track between Union and Fort Totten stations.
