RIVERDALE, Md. — A long-awaited transit project is inching closer to completion, and the people behind it want to make sure you're well informed. The Maryland Department of Transportation and Maryland Transit Administration announced a series of community meetings happening this fall.
The Purple Line has been a long time coming. It's a 16-mile light rail system that will extend from New Carrollton to Silver Spring and Bethesda. The project has been in the works for decades, and is finally slated to open in 2027.
The Purple Line Community Advisory Team (CAT) will hold a series of meetings throughout October. The virtual meetings will include teams of representatives appointed by neighborhoods, residents, civic and business associations and local governments. This thirteenth round of CAT meetings will provide neighborhoods along the 16-mile alignment within Prince George’s and Montgomery counties localized progress reports on construction activities.
“2024 is a year of momentum for the Purple Line with the project currently more than 68% complete,” said Senior Project Director, Ray Biggs II. “Our team is excited to share details about recent project achievements, including the arrival of the light rail vehicles, the completion of major construction at the University of Maryland campus and future construction plans.”
Each meeting will provide time for CAT members and the public to ask questions.
All meetings are virtual and held on Microsoft Teams from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. All links to the Teams meetings will be posted here by Sept. 30.
