Metro Transit Police shoot man in Rosslyn area after multiple carjacking attempts; Arlington County Police investigating

According to police, a Metro Transit Police shot the person after a series of carjackings in the Rosslyn area.

ARLINGTON, Va. — A Metro Transit Police officer shot a man in the Rosslyn area on Friday, the Arlington Police Department said.

Around 11:30 a.m., Arlington Police responded to assist Metro Transit Police after a shooting.

According to Arlington Police, a Metro Transit Police officer saw a man attempting to carjack someone at 19th Street North and Fort Myer Drive, which is the location of the Rosslyn Metro Station.

The suspect ran from police and the officers chased after him.

Another carjacking was attempted nearby at Kent and 19th streets.

At some point, the Metro Transit officer shot the man. Police wouldn't say if the man was armed.

“This officer was doing his job," said MTPD Chief Mike Anzallo. "He was in route to the Rosslyn Metro Station to do a station check and he happened upon this carjacking.”

The man was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries after being shot. No one else was injured.

“The officer is a little shaken up, but he is doing well," Anzallo said. "He’s got a lot of blood on his clothing from trying to do CPR.”

Eddie Smith was in his hotel room when he heard the commotion.

"Heard a shot, looked out the window and it all happened like right in front of me," said Smith who recorded the moments after the shooting on his phone. "I had a TV on in my room and I heard a breaking news alert on whatever channel I was watching, and it was oh, there was a police involved shooting in Rosslyn. I’m like, 'oh they’re talking about what I’m looking at right now.'"

Arlington County Police say they are handling the investigation into the officer who fired his weapon and the two attempted carjackings.

Friday night, police confirmed that the suspect remains in the hospital in stable condition.

On Saturday, Arlington County Police announced charges related to the incident. In a press release, police said Mark Anthony Johnson-Crestwell is charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle, resisting arrest, and other related charges. Police claim he is still in the hospital in stable condition, and the investigation remains active.
