The 5 Red Line Metro stations that will close for the summer

Five stations between Fort Totten and Glenmont will be shut down to allow the Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) access to construct the Purple Line mezzanine.

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Metro riders along the Red Line in Maryland will need to plan accordingly as WMATA plans to close five stations this summer.

According to the Washington Metro Area Transit Authority, the five stations between Fort Totten and Glenmont will be shut down to allow the Maryland Transit Authority (MTA) access to construct the Purple Line mezzanine at the Silver Spring station.

The closure is planned to start June 1 and last through August 31 and would impact the following stations:

  • Glenmont
  • Wheaton
  • Forest Glen
  • Silver Spring
  • Takoma

Metro says there is a possibility of reducing the work zone to allow the Takoma Station to reopen before the end of the construction.

"The work must be completed during a shutdown as the scope of work involves both tracks for [an] extended timeframe," The Safety and Operations Committee said during a Metro Board meeting Thursday.

During the closure, Metro says bus shuttles from Fort Totten to Glenmont will be available and a detailed service plan is currently under development.

Additional work is scheduled during these closures, including leak mitigation, automatic train control system replacements, traction power cables installation, drain pumping station replacement, tunnel standpipe replacement, and elevator/escalator maintenance.

The Purple Line is a nearly 17-mile surface rail transit project linking Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George's County. It is not run by Metro but rather the Maryland Transit Administration. It has faced numerous challenges since its conception.

In 2023, the Purple Line project was delayed again, after already being years behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget.
