Metro station in Northeast DC closes temporarily

Riders are asked to consider using local buses to get around the closure.

WASHINGTON — The Benning Road Metro Station in Northeast, D.C. was closed for several hours Monday after reports of smoke.

Train service was suspended between Stadium-Armory and Addison Road shortly before 12:30 p.m. through 3 p.m. while officials investigated the source of the smoke. DC Fire and EMS was on scene and it was determined to be an arcing insulator that caused the issue.

No injuries were reported, and riders were asked to consider taking local bus routes to get to their destinations. Shuttle buses have been established at the affected stations.

Transit officials say all normal rail service has resumed at this point.
